National Preparedness Month, sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and held annually in September, is a good reminder that natural and man-made disasters can strike at any time. It’s important to have a planned response when you’re at work, on vacation or on the road.

In 2021, 61,105 weather-related events resulted in 974 deaths and 1,667 injuries. Winter weather, heat and floods resulted in the most deaths that year, according to Injury Facts.

The National Safety Council offers safety tips specific on preparing for a variety of events such as earthquakes, floodshurricanes and tornadoes, and how to minimize fire risks.

Federal agencies, like Ready.gov and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also are valuable resources for emergency preparedness. When you face a natural or man-made emergency, try to stay informed through radio, TV or the Internet. In some cases, however, cable, electric and cell phone service will be disabled, making communication nearly impossible. The National Safety Council recommends the following general precautions that apply to many disaster situations:

Hocking Valley Community Hospital Acquires New MRI

Hocking Valley Community Hospital (HVCH) has upgraded its radiology department with a new state-of-the-art Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to better serve patients in Hocking County and surrounding areas.

Patients and visitors driving past the Emergency Room will notice a new machine parked across from the ER entrance. HVCH partnered with Captive Radiology to provide a Siemens MAGNETOM Aera 1.5T MRI. Captive Radiology currently provides equipment and maintenance, project management, quality assessment, and support services to HVCH.

“It has been a wonderful opportunity partnering with Captive Radiology to bring this latest technology in MRI to Hocking Valley,” HVCH Radiology Director Faith Todd said. “It’s an amazing machine with shorter scan time and bigger opening improve the patient experience, especially for those who are claustrophobic. We look forward to serving even more patients with decreased scan times and greatly enhanced image quality.”

“As an Ohio-based radiology provider, Captive Radiology is pleased to work alongside HVCH in providing the best diagnostic ability possible for Logan and the surrounding communities. With the latest Siemens MRI system, HVCH will expand patient care and offer higher quality diagnostics, close to home,” said Dave Kelly, Owner of Captive Radiology.

An MRI is a noninvasive medical imaging test that produces detailed images of almost every internal structure in the human body, including the organs, bones, muscles and blood vessels. They are most often used to help diagnose or monitor treatment for a variety of conditions within the chest, abdomen, and pelvis.

“Enhanced safety measures with an integrated patient monitoring system all make our new MRI a major addition to our community,” Todd concluded.

HVCH Foundation wishes to thank Aladdin Shriners Hospital Association for Children for their grant in the amount of $9,765.13. These funds will allow two departments within the hospital to better serve our pediatric patients.

Grant money will provide the following:

  • Two Pedi-Lite Pediatric Spine Boards, used for temporary mobilization of pediatric patients who have experienced a traumatic fall or accident resulting in possible spinal injuries, thus avoiding potential paralyzing of children.
  • Two Papoose Boards that also provide temporary medical stabilization of patients allowing assessment and treatment following a potential spinal or orthopedic injury to children two-six years old.
  • Two Papoose Boards for children ages 6-12 years old, which are needed to safely secure patients while rendering treatment or performing a medical procedure.
  • One Rad-5 Handheld Pulse Oximeter used to obtain measurements on pediatric patients who have suffered facial burns to avoid obstruction of airway. Oximeters can also be used for orthopedic injuries when patient needs to be sedated, allowing monitoring of oxygen level during sedation. Additionally, a reusable sensor will help HVCH save on costs.
  • Two Hi-Low Tables. Hi-Lo Tables are used for pediatric patients who require skilled therapy intervention while recovering from orthopedic, spinal cord injuries or burns. Tables provide the ability for a therapist to lower tables to a level that permits pediatric patients to transfer from a wheelchair preventing further injury or pain. Once on the table it can be raised to a more ergonomically correct level for therapist to deliver care.

“When local organizations such as Shriners grant money to non-profits like HVCH Foundation it does more than help propel our hospital forward,” Chief Public Relations Officer Latricia Johnston said. “It sends the message to our entire community that together we are on the journey of improving healthcare for Hocking County. At Hocking Valley Community Hospital everyone is treated with excellent care regardless of their ability to pay. With grants such as this one, HVCH will continue leading the way to a healthier community.”

On hand for check presentation (Left to right): Lee Howdyshell, Steven Rine Hocking Hills Shrine Club President, Latricia Johnston, HVCH CPRO, and Jim Copenhaver. Hocking County’s local Shrine Club has approximately 50 members; the 200 Shrines worldwide consist of 350,000 members. Shriners Hospital for Children is one of the most respected charities nationally and known for their philanthropic support in caring for pediatric patients who have experienced orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate. Over the years, Shriners Hospitals have expanded to an extraordinary health system with 22 facilities in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

HVCH gives Healthcare Worker of the Year, Excellence in Leadership awards

Clay Meyer, RN, Circulator Charge Nurse, Surgical Services, has been named Healthcare Worker of the Year at Hocking Valley Community Hospital.

“This is a special day because we recognize employees whose service has exceeded expectations, or whose dedication to the hospital is obvious in everything they do. That should make us all proud,” HVCH President and CEO Stacey Gabriel said.

HVCH employees cast ballots to select Healthcare Worker of the Year and Clay won by popular vote.

“Our employees had to make a difficult decision this year. They had three excellent nominations for Healthcare Worker of the Year,” Gabriel continued. Other nominees included Jenni Enderle, Clerical Support Specialist, Specialty Clinic; and Tresa McLaughlin, Environmental Services Supervisor.

“Clay is one of the nicest, easy going people you will meet. He always steps up whenever needed and goes to almost every department/clinic to help. Often, instead of asking others, he will just do what needs done himself. Not only does Clay help his teammates here, he is always willing to help his coworkers outside of work, too. In addition, the patients always show their appreciation for Clay. He always puts others first and he always does the right thing. He’s fair and honest. He does a great job explaining the procedures to our patients in a way that is easy for them to understand. He is a great team player, respectful of others, and puts himself last. He would likely do almost anything if he knew someone was in need,” Gabriel said of Meyer.
The Excellence in Leadership Award also was given during the ceremony. The award was introduced to recognize hospital directors, managers and supervisors for exemplary behavior in their leadership role. This year’s award was given to Jillian Kline, Director of Outpatient Clinics.

“Jillian has been a rising star at Hocking Valley Community Hospital. She took over the role of Director of Outpatient Clinics during the very beginning of this pandemic. To say she was baptized by fire would be no exaggeration. She quickly adapted to every move we made with all the clinics and staff to accommodate the surge planning we had to do. Jillian has a collaborative approach with staff and speaks to them in a manner that sparks their own passions, inviting them to join her in getting goals accomplished. This year, Jillian was tasked with creating the COVID Vaccine Clinic. She took this challenge with the same passion and commitment that she has taken every challenge. With more than 50 people a day funneling through the vaccine clinic, she and her team did more than their part to ensure the safety of our community through their vaccination efforts. She can see the big picture when it comes to the mission and vision of Hocking Valley Community Hospital and does not lose sight of the individuals who help to achieve this mission and vision,” Gabriel said.

“In every organization, the people who show up every day are the greatest assets and these employees have been showing up for many years. We all know healthcare is a tough industry, but knowing that our patients and customers have so many staff members with this kind of dedication makes it all worthwhile,” Gabriel concluded.
